Accomplishments since October Election
For those of you who may feel a little anxious that things are not moving as fast as you think they should be, you should think about the things that have been accomplished since this new council has been together.
Every single council member should be congratulated on their efforts.
Deputy Administrators -
Deputy Administrator and several high-paying positions were eliminated and with a cost savings of approx $500K.
New Law Firm –
The tribe retained a new law firm – Michael Best and Friedrich. This firm has extensive knowledge with all areas that affect Tribal affairs. This law firm maintains commitment of the highest level for their clients, and have already provided huge relief to the tribe.
The Bond
Payment for the bond was stopped in the month of December. The trustee, Wells Fargo filed a lawsuit in federal court attempting to put the casino in receivership. The judge ruled that the bond agreement was invalid.
Enterprise Management:
Smoke Shop -
This enterprise was set to be inventoried and serious problems were encountered. The accounting firm of Wipfli-Ulrich was brought in to conduct an audit of the smoke shop operations. The results of that audit has not yet been finalized nor forwarded to Tribal Administration or the Tribal Council.
Ojibwe Mall -
store has always had problems. Management was temporarily assigned to Bill Conn to resolve immediate issues and concerns regarding operations and yet remain open to provide continuity of services to the community.
A concentrated effort to clean up the whole store and gas station is still underway. Another concern was lack of stock rotation and pricing as another major management issue as well as a community concern.
Customer service was identified as nearly non-existent. Under current efforts, changes are being implemented to make necessary adjustments in personnel practices when dealing with the public.
New suppliers are being interviewed with the goal of setting affordable prices to better serve the tribal members. Plans are also underway to begin running weekly specials that were popular in the past. A $1.00 section is also being looked at for a wide variety of products.
After the clean-up is completed, the in-store bakery and deli will be back in operation with extended hours of operation.
Full time management will be posted and hired as soon as the store gets in order.
Gas prices are being reviewed daily to stay in line with the surrounding area which reduced the average cost to the tribal members and consumers of 11 cents per gallon.

After operations are normalized, job descriptions will be posted for the management positions.
Judicial Program –
Currently being reviewed by tribal council.
Committees –
All committees were dissolved. New committee members continue to be appointed and will continue until all committees are re-established so please watch for postings.
Fiscal Responsibility –
Tribal government is fiscally responsible to the tribal members. Changes are being proposed and implemented by current leadership. In order to make those changes a part of the Constitutional duties of the Tribal Council, the Constitution Committee will be instrumental in assisting in the drafting of the amendments which will be put forth to the membership for approval.
Peter Christensen Health Clinic –
Clinic project being audited by Tribal forensic auditor.
Tribal Organization -
The overall tribal organization and enterprises are being looked at as well as job assessments are being reviewed to make sure that wages are in line with regional and job specific standards. The other positions within the HR department are being posted as well.
Human Resources –
The HR program is going through a much needed revamp. The HR director’s position is posted with a goal of having a new HR director by the end of February.
Tribal Website –
The tribal website, www.ldftribe.com was resurected and is currently being updated and all information updated. A new website will be designed and replace this one with the capabilities of departments being able to update and correct themselves.
Travel –
Travel has been limited to save the tribe additional money. Alternatives to people traveling for training is being looked at and alternatives will be implemented.

That’s the truth. If you can’t pass a drug test you should not be employed by the tribe much less being the administrator pr the tribal chair. Shame on you so called do-gooders.
Do you realize how many people would loose their jobs if everyone that did drugs got fired. You can go sit at any bar on or off the rez and watch people go in and out, coming back in smelling of pot, yes Tribal employees. Fair is fair, you let one go because of drugs then do random drug tests on the spot and start firing, there are unemployed drug free people here in Flambeau that need jobs. This might start cleaning up drugs here. Another thing, make tanif workers start working their hours, they only make certain people work their hours off. There is people that don’t qualify for tanif that are struggling too, this isn’t fair to others.It shows how people managing these positions are not being fair to all. New council is working to clean things up but, don’t only look at the high paying positions, look in the little offices at the center also.
Flambeau deserves drug-free employees. Their Are policies in place to follow, Leadership needs to lead in this matter, Its all down-hill if they dont make a stand now
Wholeheartedly concur with the provision that ALL tribal employees be able to pass a drug test. Can you imagine any half decent company or establishment in the country allowing druggies to comprise not only their government but to be the head of the government too? My God. THINK people, just THINK!!!
If the clinic administrator and clinic managers salaries were decreased there would be more money to put back into the clinic and maybe hire a few more nurses.
I for one can’t believe all the positive things that this council has done in little over 2 months……thanks to all of you!!!!!!!! the next 2 years should be some of our best years….. I supported change for years and you guys are proof that I was right….Don’t let some of the Indian crabs pull you down….as far as Brooks…he’s a very smart person with lots of compassion for his people….glad to see him as administrator!!!!!
First of all, there are enough nurses standing around the clinic with their finger up their asses. You need to get some nurses in there who are a little more compassionate to the patients and who don’t talk about the patients after a couple of beers. I walked around the hospital over the weekend visiting people and the complaints!! Mostly if Dr. Carey would listen, my kid,husband,wife,whatever would not have been admitted. This woman needs to start doing her doctoring and stop saying that everyone needs to get an appointment at the FRC. Maybe she needs an appointment with the medical board of Wisconsin. Where the hell do these people come from who are hired as doctors? Better get the clinic in shape before anymore of our people die!!!!!!!!!

Well, Who among the candidates for Chairperson, would make the entire Tribe happy? None. Because whoever does get the position, there will always be a few who disagree.What could a temporary Chairperson do in the months remaining before the next election that leaving Dee in wont do? Think about it.Anyone can “shake hands” or sign papers,but then again what about breaking ties in a vote? Do we want some pessimistic person or an optimistic person? Who would fit this bill?
You are so right, whoever they make the temporary chair person, there will be folks unhappy with the decision.
Now, it is a good thing that elected officials listen to their people (they should!) but you can never please everyone. There is a good quote that goes something like this: “By trying to please all the parties you end up making everyone mad.” It is true. Everyone gets offended, this paralyzes the progress and nothing gets done. So just do what you have to do!

All anyone wants is a chance to better their lot in life by being employed by the tribe, including people who are now in who were previously ousted by committees. I notice that the “insiders” must have conveniently changed the Tribal Constitution & Bylaws to let these individuals back in after the Constitution was changed to reflect that anyone holding Tribal Office that were removed from their position due to misfeasance or malfeasance of office could NEVER hold any Tribal office again!!??? COME ON!!!!

First of all I can say there has been a lot of good changes for the government. There is a lot of work that still needs to be done. People complain that the store is in the red and never makes a profit. Well part of that has to do with the government making it nearly impossible to get a job. Drug user or NOT. Every penny that comes onto our reservation quickly leaves to Park Falls, Minocqua, Tomahawk or where ever else we hire people from. None of this money stays in the community.
I do see people with drug problems on the reservation. I also see many programs and qualified people to help them. First, we need to employ our people…get them used to working and if they face drug and alcohol problems, let’s help them face their addiction problems with help and caring people. I am tired of seeing people suffering from addiction and tribal people turning their backs on each other. A few of my family members are addicted to pills. I feel sorry for them, I know they’d probably care more about themselves if they had a job or a chance at work. I never see them getting better as long as they can’t find work. I see the hopelessness in the people. I remember back in the day…People would fill the store and spend lots of money every Friday for groceries. Most parents both worked… There were no excuses for people to NOT work. Now, the drug testing is just an excuse not to work and live off welfare. How many families have exhausted their benefits? Where are our people heading? This scares me the most. It’s time to look out for everybody!! I am sick of seeing a workforce fo alcoholics!!! I sick of seeing Flambo people so poor…The only good thing they have to look forward to is per cap…someday… I mean come on give your people a JOB…quit worrying what they do on their free-time. I smoke a joint when I get off work. This is my relaxation, my treat for a long hard day of work. I understand everyone can’t handle that, but some people enjoy that instead of a beer after work. It’s a shame we are discouraged from employment from the tribe..because we are the ones that can often see outside the box.
The difference is, alcohol is legal, pot isn’t. There is help for substance abuse, those who use drugs need to make a decision do you want to continue to use or do you want to get clean, pass a drug test and support your family. There is a lot of people that treat their hair and and pass a drug test and there are some that have tryed and still failed. I told one of my own family members that they had a choice, keep smoking pot and struggle to support your family or get off pot pass a drug test and get a job to support your family better. It’s a choice. The honest thing is to hire drug free people over users, if drug users are hired over non users that would be so unfair, it’s like being punished for being drug free.
I agree. If someone is having a hard time getting a job or supporting your family and your a drug user, then where is the money coming from to support your habit? Drugs are not cheap. Use that money on your family.

Lots of things are illegal…including supporting your minor children with cigarettes and alcohol. Nobody sees the dangers in that. I mean how many young people have we lost to Alcohol related accidents and yet….The smoke shop parking lot is filled on the weekends..along with the bars with all the tribal employees and their friends..becuz they are the only ones with money these days..since they are all drug-free..setting a good example for our kids…Nice..I think I’ll sit in my BOX and smoke my doobie and watch you all fight each other. The policy like a lot of other policies need revision. Times have changed and sometimes we need to give other people a chance. Smoking pot is not bad. However, a leader of the tribe needs to follow the policies put in place. If we are to allow pot smokers to not have to drug test, then change it. But for now, what message are we sending to our youth?
Hold some accountable but not everyone hey? Thats what the Tribe is trying to stop is unfairness. OMG, pot is not legal. It’s not that people that smoke pot is are bad people it’s the fact that when people use pot they make a choice to do something illeagal, and that can keep them from passing a drug test and getting hired. A lot of places of business are doing pre-employment drug testing, not just the Tribe. For you to think the Tribe should not do drug testing is just not right. That opens the door for any kind of illegal activities.

Just look at the common sense of so called people who are entering comments on this site. Did most of them ever graduate from 3rd grade??? It’s really scary thinking that most of these people are young and might even get a chance to be involved in our Tribal government someday! The best case scenerio then would be to give our tribe back to the white people to run. Our people don’t have enough sense to come in out of the rain and mostly are only looking for a handout without working for it!! Half of our current council members can’t make meetings but any night of the week you can go into the casino and either see them gambling or just watching people gamble. COME ON NOW!!! In my opinion most of the people (tribal), do not deserve ANYTHING if they can’t at least work for it. Nowadays, everyone wants everything handed to them for nothing. Look at the so called “school” by the old casino in town. Where is everyone’s so called “GOAL” in life?? Evidently these individuals could not handle being exposed to the “outer world” enough to “make it on their own” so now they have a place where they can conveniently stand around and smoke outside and forget about trying to make it in the “outside”! My God, 45 years ago we had to adjust to Lakeland High and function appropriately in society, evidently these kids can’t do that and it’s a crying shame to think that our future leadership might be just like this!!!! Much less, how can the parents of these kids even call themselves responsible parents to not let the kids try to make it rather than just giving up? Enough said for now but THINK THINK THINK!!!!!

im not a pot smoker but…isn’t this “weed” been a part of mother earth since………since……..whenever….the start of life. It’s not “manmade”…it’s a part of the earth….mother earth. So, the big question is…WHY was it a “part” of earth? This herb was meant for “something”…right now it legally used for cancer, glaucoma, etc,. This herb should be harvested and deemed legal as has aspirin and so many other drugs taken from our plantlife.

I’m backing the Tribal councils decision on Brooks, but I do have my concerns with Marilyn Miller, she may have some educational background but, she’s new to what is really going on here
So would any new administrator to this position, give her a chance, she has a masters degree,working toward a phd, why wouldnt she be able to learn,just like Brooks and Buzz had to learn. we need to all have a common goal to try to hire our own people,especially when they have pursued and accomplished their education. Marilyn is interim until an administrator is hired.
I am so sick of hearing about that masters degree and all that education. A lot of people are educated but do you see them blowing a big horn about it. People skills are required also.

Marilyn is fast burning bridges wherever she goes. She already puts herself above others by the way she conducts herself with no respect to this present council or people who are good workers. The store definitely needs help, but why was Anna automatically appointed in there?? due to Barry and her other connections on the council, and thats the way it is. Same goes for HR. Lisa couldnt even handle speaking with clients, and now she struts around the community center like shes got something up her _ss, thinking shes it, well, for the time being, I guess she is. The best thing our Council has done in the last year is to separate the Chairman and Administrator positions. The combination of these to is TOO MUCH POWER FOR ONE PERSON, leading to abuse. Keep these positions separated. With checks and balances, we’ll all be better off.

Brooks and the Tribal Council were invited to National Indian Gaming Conference to speak about the bond. A mess that Dee, Vicky and Carl got the tribe into. None of the “other” Council members chose to go. The people that did attend the conference were interviewed by the “Wall Street Journal” and Indian Gaming News as well as an investigator for “60 Minuets”. The story is being told. The current as well as former council members that caused this mess are being investigated by the FBI as well as IRS. Why do you think Dee and Joey are soooooo nervous?

The monies,funds,cash,etc, was mis-appropriated long before the new clinic was even built. Brooks is doing fine. A good plan is in place, and all is going to work out the way it is designed to. I would like to clear the rumors up that I received a $10,220. loan or grant from the Tribe. Yes, apparently Elmer Sunn, Mike Christensen, Myron Doud, Marilyn Miller, Dee Mayo, Joey Wildcat, Goldie Larsen, Betty Jack and whoever else are passing papers around showing that I received a check for this amount from the Tribe. Well, I sure wish I would of received a check for $10,220 I would get my yard landscaped!! These funds were for a mounds system, because our septic system was failing. These funds were reimbursed back to the tribe by IHS. Why aren’t you showing the rest of the people that have received septic systems? Is it because I am related to Betty Jo, Barry, Buzz and Luci? What about all of the other tribal members that DO NOT live on the reservation full time, they get elder money for utilities, how about the ones that have received money to buy their homes that don’t live on the reservation full time. What about the Million $ the Tribe spent on buying the Bobidosh place. Who benefited from that? One of them was none other then Mike Christensen himself. Mike & Myron, why aren’t you bitching about that? If you all wanted to know what I received than you should of submitted a FOIA request from IHS out of Rhinelander. IHS is funded by Federal money, you know, tax dollars, that we or some of us have to pay. They would of sent you a listing of everyone on the LDF reservation that has received services for a septic system, not just Marlene Virden. When I get the list of the rest of the tribal members that have received assistance from IHS, I will have it published on this site.

For the past year I have helped Betty bring her house out of foreclosure, twice, as well as securing a loan to make it current. I invited her to my daughters wedding. I felt Betty was a friend of mine and I love her like a Grandmother. Yet today she voted to remove Brooks as Chairman, she stood by and watched Marilyn, Dee and Joey board our office shut. She stood by and watched Marilyn fire me.
The other day I had a very frank discussion with Betty about how she was part of the problem, she was stooping to the sickness that was bringing the tribe to ruin. I said that more than ever, the tribe needed her best and healthiest self present at the council meetings. How one day she is going to wake up and realize her thinking about what she is doing was simply wrong.
Lac du Flambeau is in huge trouble. I wish you all the best luck as your going to need it. You have an incompetent administrator who’s ego is in charge and has not a clue what she is doing.
I don’t think the current council has a clue what fools they look like nor how many eyes are watching this debacle. This is really really bad for all the people of Lac du Flambeau.

I want to know what is it that Betty Jack, Goldie, and Elmer are hoping to accomplish with their actions. What have they done in the past month to help out Lac Du Flambeau tribal members? What have they done to make government and business run smoother?
Those complaints against Marilyn are very real. And by ignoring these complaints, or downplaying them as insignificant is slapping our tribal members and workers in the face. And I have tried to stay out of the mix, but when my name is brought up I cannot sit idle.
Betty Jack in particular spoke about the fear of Tribal members. AS I see it now, people need to fear even more because of Betty Jack’s actions. I honestly cannot understand her of anyone stabbing me in the back. I supported Betty in the elections and have helped she and her family as much as I can.
I am going to start the website up like it used to, it is time that people know what really is going on. What is going on is not good.
I understand Dee Mayo rocketed to her feet when it was pointed out that she was on the executive board that threw tens of millions of dollars away into fraudulent ventures. Perhaps this is the reason that she wants to shut down the investigations into past actions of the previous six pack.
